As a student of the master's degree in "Music and Performance", you will deal in a special way with questions of music and its performativity. You have the opportunity to help shape innovative paths in music theater research and later to take on a responsible position.
In the course of study, you examine the interaction between music and performance from a wide variety of angles. Both general aspects of artistic and cultural expressions and performance art in the narrower sense are covered. The course covers a wide range of topics: music theater in its full range (opera, operetta, musical, dance, revue, cabaret), music and theatricality (concerts, street music culture and pageants), music and audiovisual media such as film and television, interactions between Music and visual arts.
Music and performances are both fleeting. Both are therefore also shown in different media states - from live performance to audiovisual storage. This diversity of the subject requires a multi-perspective approach in the course: Methods and findings from music, theater and film studies as well as art and dance studies are used and continued independently.
In close collaboration with other subjects at the University of Bayreuth, you have the opportunity to deepen your own focus and to get to know new areas of knowledge and methods. With regular visits to the colloquia and active involvement in conferences and workshops, we support you in your first steps on the 'floor' of research.
In addition to a possible academic career, the course introduces you to current areas of responsibility in the labor market. Possible professional fields are: theater work through directing and dramaturgy (concert / music theater), public relations e.g. in theaters, archives or museums, music journalism in the press, radio and internet, cultural management and administration as well as activities in the music industry (e.g. specialist books or music publishers) or in the recording industry.
