  • Bachelor of Sociology

  • The sociologist is interested, among other things, in the structures of a society, in the evolution of the labor market, in the evolution of the family, in power relations, in the impact of communication technologies, in identities. and social mobilizations.

    The first two years of this program are devoted to general training in sociology (the various currents of sociological thought, methodology, understanding and analysis of societies).

    The last year allows, for its part, the development of knowledge in a particular field, by means of optional courses, concentrations or a major / minor orientation.
  • Goals
  • The objectives of the baccalaureate and the major in sociology aim to initiate and learn sociology as a discipline of the social sciences. The general objectives of the program are the understanding of social relations and the development of societies, the appropriation of knowledge produced by sociology, the acquisition of skills allowing their mobilization in sociological practice, in research or in other contexts of Social Action.

    Students will:

  • Acquire an understanding of the transformations of societies, their structures, social relations and the capacity for action of groups and individuals;
  • Master different theories, analytical approaches, works and concepts in sociology;
  • Differentiate and compare the different sociological reasonings;
  • Articulate methodologies, research approaches and intellectual postures (critical, pragmatic, etc.) with social objects (collective action, individual action, discourse, etc.);
  • Acquire know-how in methodological approaches (quantitative, qualitative, ethnographic, argumentative, hermeneutical, relational, historical)
  • Operationalize research linked to sociological questioning.
  • Understand the social and intellectual conditions of production and reception of knowledge in sociology
  • Particularities

  • The theory and research-oriented program prepares the student for graduate studies. At the end of his training, the student will have developed the skills necessary to develop research projects, produce qualitative and quantitative analyzes and participate in the evaluation of social intervention programs and public policies.
  • The program favors political sociology (political relations in society, discourse analysis, etc.); sociology of culture (cultural industries, sociology of art, etc.); and economic sociology (globalization, social economy, etc.).
  • This general training allows the development of knowledge in a specific field such as immigration, international development, the condition of women, social exclusion, etc. It is possible to take a minor or one of the concentrations offered in the humanities. Students can even afford an “à la carte” concentration in the field of study of their choice after agreement with the program director. The courses then followed can serve as a foundation for a master's degree in another discipline of the human sciences.
  • UQAM offers training in sociology at the three study cycles.
  • The students of the Department of Sociology publish the journal R5 annually.
