  • Settlement Studies

  • In this two-year diploma program, the first of its kind in western Canada, you will develop the skills and competencies needed to work effectively with newcomers to Canada in the role of a settlement/intercultural services provider. You will examine the foundational and current practices of settlement work in Canada and develop strategies for empowering, supporting, and advocating for clients.

    Courses in the program cover such topics as active listening, communication, intercultural competency, family dynamics, community development and human rights; culture, gender, and sexuality; and anti-oppressive practices and reconciliation.

    The program may be entered directly in Year 1, or in Year 2 after completion of NorQuest’s Community Support Worker certificate program.

    Practicum/Work Experience

    This program includes two field placements totalling 400 hours.

Entry Requirement


  • Applicant must be high school passed. 

Application Process


  • Language Arts – this requirement can be met with any of the following, or an equivalent course:
    • 60% in English Language Arts 30-1
    • 60% in English Language Arts 30-2
    • 60% in ESLG 1860
    • 60% in ESLG 1898
  • Note: Academic admission requirements are different from English language proficiency (ELP) requirements. NorQuest College English for Academic Purposes courses may be used to meet both requirements. See below for details.

    ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

    If English is your second language, you must provide proof of ELP prior to admission. ELP test results must have been obtained within two years of the start date of your program.

    Acceptable evidence of ELP may be one of the following test scores:

  • IELTS Academic: 6.5; no section score below 6
  • TOEFL iBT: 84: no section score below 21
  • CELPIP General: 8; no section score below 7
  • CAEL: 70; no section score below 70
  • Duolingo: 115

    Note: Graduates of NorQuest College’s Community Support Worker program may apply for direct admission to Year 2 of the Settlement Studies diploma program.

    If you are missing requirements for this program, you may be eligible to apply for the NorQuest Bridging to Post Secondary program.

    Practicum/Work Experience Requirements

    The following is not required for admission purposes, but will be required before you attend the practicum. There may be additional costs associated with completing this requirement:

  • Clear Police Information Check. Vulnerable Sector Check is also required if over 18 years of age.

    International students must obtain a co-op work permit before beginning the work-integrated learning component of the program. A medical exam may also be required. See Co-Op Work Permit for more information.

    Progression

    Students must attain a pass grade in each course to progress through the program.

    Graduation Requirements

    Students must pass all courses and achieve a minimum 2.0 grade point average (GPA) to qualify for graduation.

    Honours Criteria

  • Overall grade point average (GPA) greater than or equal to 3.7
  • The student must not have failed or repeated any courses
