  • Interdisciplinary Therapy Assistant

  • The Interdisciplinary Therapy Assistant diploma program prepares students to work in today's interdisciplinary health-care systems. This program will provide students with a strong occupational and physical therapy assistant background, and incorporate essential assistant-level skills in speech language therapy and therapeutic recreation. Equipped with skills in these four rehabilitation disciplines, students will be prepared to meet industry demand and work in various general therapy, rehabilitation, as well as discipline-specific positions.

    If you enjoy helping people and want a career assisting patients to overcome injuries, or impairments, this diploma program could be for you.

    The program delivers theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills using a balance of discipline-specific and interdisciplinary courses.

    Program graduates will be prepared to:

  • communicate and collaborate as a valuable member of a client-centred interdisciplinary health-care team
  • assist with effective physical therapy and occupational therapy practice by providing safe and competent care across client populations
  • support other rehabilitation disciplines, including therapeutic recreation and speech-language pathology
  • demonstrate effective professionalism, leadership, and reflective practice skills
  • Applicants are requested to review the job requirements listed below and assess their ability to fulfill the demands of the therapy assistant occupation. As a therapy assistant, you must be able to:

  • work shifts and weekends
  • be on your feet for extended periods of time
  • use your knees, back, and arms to assist clients
  • lift 30 pounds
  • touch and provide care for clients of all ages, cultures, and genders
  • manage time and resources in a busy work setting
  • communicate and collaborate effectively in a team
  • enjoy working with people
  • Note: This new program is founded on the accredited Physical Therapy Assistant diploma program and is seeking accreditation for the first graduating cohort.

    Accreditation

    The Interdisciplinary Therapy Assistant program is seeking accreditation by the Occupational Therapist Assistant & Physiotherapist Assistant Education Accreditation Program (OTA & PTA EAP) of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada. The program has been granted Candidacy Status, which denotes an affiliation with the OTA & PTA EAP and is a pre-requisite for accreditation of the education program. Candidacy Status does not assure that the program will be granted accreditation status once the program undergoes a full accreditation review.

    Practicum/Work Experience

    This program includes five practicums with a minimum of 150 hours in each discipline.

    The practicum schedules follow the clinical site and preceptor’s schedule and may include days, evenings, or weekends. Student may be required to travel outside of their community to complete some of the practicums.  Access to a vehicle may be required.

  • Applicant must be high school passed .

Application Process


  • The following are not required for admission purposes, but will be required before you attend your practicum. There may be additional costs associated with completing these requirements.

  • Successful completion of all prerequisite courses, including written and practical exams.
  • The following courses are required:
    • BLS (CPR): XHLT 1200 (current within one year)
    • It's Your Move: XHLT 1070 (current within one year)
  • Clear Police Information Check. Vulnerable Sector Check is also required if over 18 years of age.
  • Up-to-date immunization records
  • N95 mask fit testing as arranged by the program (current within two years)
  • Completion of the AHS Information & Privacy online learning module
  • Completion of the HSPNet consent form.

    International students must obtain a co-op work permit before beginning the work-integrated learning component of the program. A medical exam may also be required. See Co-Op Work Permit for more information.

  • Language Arts – this requirement can be met with any of the following, or an equivalent course:
    • 60% in English Language Arts 30-1
    • 70% in English Language Arts 30-2
    • 60% in ESLG 1860
    • 70% in ESLG 1898
  • Mathematics – this requirement can be met with the following, or an equivalent course:
    • 50% in Mathematics 10C
  • Biology – this requirement can be met with the following, or an equivalent course:
    • 60% in Biology 30
  • IELTS Academic: 6.5; no section score below 6
  • TOEFL iBT: 84; no section score below 21
  • CELPIP General: 8; no section score below 7
  • CAEL: 70; no section score below 70
  • Duolingo: 115

    Note: Academic admission requirements are different from English language proficiency (ELP) requirements. NorQuest College English for Academic Purposes courses may be used to meet both requirements. See below for details.

    ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

    If English is your second language, you must provide proof of ELP prior to admission. ELP test results must have been obtained within two years of the start date of your program.
