  • Practical Nurse

  • To meet Alberta's growing needs in health care, the demand for licensed practical nurses is increasing. NorQuest College's Practical Nurse program, one of the largest in Canada, will prepare you to become a professional practical nurse educated to give high-quality care to clients in a variety of health-care settings.

    Student Success

    Students are more likely to be successful in this program if they:

  • are physically and emotionally able to manage workplace demands
  • have access to a vehicle to travel to complete their clinical practice
  • have access to a computer and Internet, and basic computer skills
  • are able to demonstrate professional and ethical behaviour
  • Applicants are requested to assess their ability to fulfill the demands of the occupation of practical nurse. As a practical nurse, you must be able to:

  • work shifts and weekends
  • be on your feet for extended periods of time
  • use your knees, back, and arms to move clients who have minimal body strength
  • provide care to support people of various diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, gender identities, sexual preferences, and socio-economic status
  • function effectively in stressful situations
  • perform all skills independently
  • Students are required to travel to various locations to complete their clinical practice. Access to a vehicle may be required.

    Practicum/Work Experience

    This program includes four practicums totalling 680 hours.

    Practicums may be arranged in or close to the student's community. The student's practicum schedule will follow the preceptor's schedule and may include day, evening, or night shifts any day of the week, including weekends and holidays. Students are required to work full-time during the practicum and provide their own transportation to the facility.

  • Additional Certification

  • To practice as a licensed practical nurse, you must obtain licensure from the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). You must pass a national exam, the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam to attain active licensure with the CLPNA. Entry Requirement


  • Applicant must be high school passed .

Application Process


  • Language Arts – this requirement can be met with any of the following, or an equivalent course:
    • 60% in English Language Arts 30-1
    • 70% in English Language Arts 30-2
    • 60% in ESLG 1860
    • 70% in ESLG 1898
  • Mathematics – this requirement can be met with any of the following, or an equivalent course:
    • 60% in Mathematics 20-1
    • 70% in Mathematics 20-2
    • 50% in Mathematics 30-1
    • 60% in Mathematics 30-2
    • 60% in MATH 1524
  • Biology – this requirement can be met with the following, or an equivalent course:
    • 60% in Biology 30
  • It is strongly recommended that students take the following courses prior to entering the program:

  • ANPH 1001
  • ANPH 1002
  • ENGL 2550
  • PSYC 1060
  • SOCI 1000
  • These courses can be taken through Open Studies at NorQuest College. There is a heavy course load in the first term of the Practical Nurse program; completing these courses allows for better success once you are enrolled. If you intend to apply for full-time student loan funding, contact a student navigator regarding course load prior to enrolling in Open Studies courses, as this may affect your funding opportunities.

    Note: For all deliveries, the Practical Nurse program has a five-year shelf-life regulation on all nursing courses, whether the courses were taken at NorQuest College or transferred from another institution. Visit Transfer Credit for more information.

    Academic admission requirements are different from English language proficiency (ELP) requirements. NorQuest College English for Academic Purposes courses may be used to meet both requirements. See below for details.

    ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

    If English is your second language, you must provide proof of ELP prior to admission. ELP test results must have been obtained within two years of the start date of your program.

    Acceptable evidence of ELP may be one of the following test scores:

  • IELTS Academic: no score below 7.5 in listening, 7 in speaking, 6.5 in reading, 7 in writing
  • TOEFL iBT: 94
  • CELBAN: no score below 10 in listening, 8 in speaking, 8 in reading, 7 in writing
  • minimum of 50% in ESLG 1860 and ESLG 1861

    Practicum/Work Experience Requirements

    Students are required to travel to various locations to complete their clinical practice experiences. Within the time frame of the program, every effort is made to accommodate students in clinical practice placements. Access to a vehicle may be required.

    The following are not required for admission purposes, but will be required before you attend the first clinical practice. There may be additional costs associated with completing these requirements.

  • Successful completion of all prerequisite courses.
  • The following courses are required; certificates will be awarded upon completion:
    • WHMIS: XBUS 1017 (current within three years)
    • BLS (CPR): XHLT 1200 (current within one year)
    • It's Your Move: XHLT 1070 (current within one year)
    • HPBE: XHLT 1023 (current within three years)
  • Clear Police Information Check. Vulnerable Sector Check is also required if over 18 years of age. 
  • Up-to-date immunization records.
  • Completion of the AHS Information & Privacy online learning module
  • Completion of the HSPNet consent form.
  • N95 mask fit testing (current within two years).

    International students must obtain a co-op work permit before beginning the work-integrated learning component of the program. A medical exam may also be required. See Co-Op Work Permit for more information.

    Progression

    A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 is required to be considered in good academic standing.

    Graduation Requirements

    Students must pass all courses and achieve a minimum 2.0 grade point average (GPA) to qualify for graduation. The program must be completed within five years of your start date.

    Honours Criteria

  • Overall grade point average (GPA) greater than or equal to 3.7
  • The student must not have failed or repeated any courses
