  • Pharmacy Technician

  • Our nationally accredited Pharmacy Technician program thoroughly prepares graduates for this fast-paced and highly respected occupation. As a regulated pharmacy technician, you will be involved with dispensing prescriptions, preparing compounded medications and sterile products, repackaging pharmaceuticals, managing inventory, teaching patients to use medical devices, and providing patient care.

    Students are more likely to be successful in this program if they:

  • have strong arithmetic skills

  • have access to a computer with strong computer and typing skills
  • have good written and verbal communication skills
  • have good vision and manual dexterity and can stand and sit for extended periods of time
  • Applicants are requested to review the job requirements listed below and assess their ability to fulfill the demands of the occupation of pharmacy technician.

    As a pharmacy technician, you must be able to:

  • work day, evening, and weekend shifts

  • use your knees, back, and arms to move objects that weigh up to 10 kilograms
  • have good manual dexterity and vision, which are essential for some tasks

  • Additional Program Details

    NorQuest’s pharmacy technician lab provides students with practical, hands-on training in compounding, sterile product preparation, repackaging, inventory management, and dispensing. In the lab, students have the opportunity to use technologies currently employed by those working in the profession, including laminar airflow hoods and Kroll® computer software.

    Our state-of-the-art simulation lab prepares students to work collaboratively with other health-care professionals as part of an interdisciplinary team.

    Accreditation

    The Pharmacy Technician diploma program of NorQuest College has been awarded accreditation by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs for a five-year term, from July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2022.

    This accreditation standard means that graduates are eligible to sit for the entry-to-practice Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada Qualifying Examination and may go on to become regulated technicians under the Alberta College of Pharmacy.

    Practicum/Work Experience

    This program includes two practicums totalling 320 hours.

    Two four-week practicum rotations are full-time and shifts may be scheduled on weekends or evenings. We try to place students in the greater Edmonton area if desired, but you may be required to travel to other locations in Alberta to complete the practicum. Access to a vehicle may be required.

  • Additional Certification

  • Graduates of the NorQuest College Pharmacy Technician diploma program will be recognized as eligible to write the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC) Qualifying Examination and register as a provisional pharmacy technician with the Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP). Successful completion of the PEBC examination and various tasks with the ACP are necessary for registration as a pharmacy technician in Alberta. This process takes a minimum of six& months after graduation to complete before licensure as a pharmacy technician can be achieved.

  • Pharmacy technicians work in hospitals, community pharmacies, pharmaceutical companies, and insurance companies.

  • Language Arts – this requirement can be met with any of the following, or an equivalent course:
    • 60% in English Language Arts 30-1
    • 70% in English Language Arts 30-2
    • 60% in ESLG 1860
    • 70% in ESLG 1898
  • Mathematics – this requirement can be met with any of the following, or an equivalent course:
    • 60% in Mathematics 30-1
    • 60% in Mathematics 30-2
  • Biology – this requirement can be met with the following, or an equivalent course:
    • 60% in Biology 30
  • Chemistry – this requirement can be met with the following, or an equivalent course:
    • 60% in Chemistry 30
  • high school diploma, general education diploma (GED), or equivalent
  • successful completion of NorQuest College's Pharmacy Technician diploma arithmetic assessment*

    Note: The academic admission requirements are different from English language proficiency (ELP) requirements. 

    ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

    If English is your second language or you were educated outside of Canada, you must provide proof of ELP prior to admission. Language proficiency test results must meet the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) language proficiency requirements. ELP test results must have been obtained within two years of the start date of your program.

  • Acceptable evidence of ELP may be one of the following test scores:
    • IELTS Academic: 6.5, no section score below 6
    • TOEFL iBT: 91; no score below 21 in listening, 23 in speaking, 22 in reading, 25 in writing
    • MELAB: 81; no score below 80 in listening, 3+ in speaking, 83 in reading, 80 in writing
    • CanTEST: no score below 4.5 in listening, 4.5 in speaking, 4.5 in reading, 4 in writing
  • Graduation from approved Canadian high school, with at least three consecutive years of full-time academic study and satisfactory completion of Grade 12 English or its equivalent. The high school's language of instruction must be English. A GED is not acceptable.
  • Successful completion of a recognized Canadian undergraduate degree program at a post-secondary institution where the language of instruction is English.
  • Note: As the above language proficiency standards are established by the Alberta College of Pharmacy and the NAPRA, no other evidence of ELP, including completion of NorQuest coursework or other studies in English outside of Canada, will be accepted. ELP is a separate requirement from the English academic admission requirement.

    Practicum/Work Experience Requirements

    The following are not required for admission purposes, but will be required before you attend your practicum. There may be additional costs associated with completing these requirements.

  • Successful completion of all prerequisite courses.
  • Successful completion of a pre-practicum assessment (written and practical).
  • The following course is required; a certificate will be awarded upon completion:
    • BLS (CPR): XHLT 1200 (current within one year)
  • Clear Police Information Check. Vulnerable Sector Check is also required if over 18 years of age. 
  • Up-to-date immunization records.
  • Completion of the AHS Information & Privacy online learning module
  • Completion of the HSPNet consent form.

    International students must obtain a co-op work permit before beginning the work-integrated learning component of the program. A medical exam may also be required. See Co-Op Work Permit for more information.

    Progression

    Students must attain a pass grade in each course to progress through the program. A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 is required to be considered in good academic standing.

    Due to space restrictions in labs, students who are completing the program on a full-time basis will be given priority over part-time students if class capacity is an issue.

    Graduation Requirements

    Students must pass all courses and achieve a minimum 2.0 grade point average (GPA) to qualify for graduation. The program must be completed within four years of your start date.

    Honours Criteria

  • Overall grade point average (GPA) greater than or equal to 3.7
  • The student must not have failed or repeated any courses
