Study in Sweden in English

There are around 40 universities where you can study in English, and they offer around 1,000 different study programs in English. The system of Education in Sweden allows international students to study for a semester or an academic year, pursue a full bachelor’s degree, or even a master’s program entirely in English. 

Required documents to study in English in Sweden

The application process in the universities in Sweden is centrally organized. However, the documents required at the time of application differ from the course and study level you choose to study. However, some of the main document requirements are mentioned below:

  • A valid passport
  • 10th and 12th results
  • a Swedish Bachelor’s degree, from an internationally recognized university(if applying for bachelors)
  • English proficiency test
  • Identification document (ID)
  • Letter of Recommendation from professors and managers
  • Statement of purpose mentioning the reason for studying in the particular course and university.
  • Curriculum vitae or resume mentioning your academic qualification and work experience)
  • Portfolio(if required)
  • Certificates of extracurricular activities

English proficiency test

Proficiency in the English language is necessary when you want to apply to study in English at one of the English universities in Sweden. If English is not your mother tongue, you may have to take an English test and submit your English test score while applying for admission. The English certificate should be from an internationally recognized test, and you need to meet the minimum required grade. The following are the most accepted English language tests in Swedish universities:

  • TOEFL iBT
  • IELTS Academic
  • PTE Academic
  • C1 Advanced (formerly known as Cambridge English Advanced)

The requirements of English proficiency in universities in Sweden are easy to understand. Most of the Swedish universities set their English proficiency requirements to levels. These are “English 5”, “English 6” or “English 7. The following table describes these levels:

Study in Sweden without IELTS

In some cases, international students do not need to take an English exam to prove their proficiency in the language. Most notably, these exceptions are:

  • Candidate with 60 ECTS credits or the credits equivalent to it coming from an EU country or Switzerland where English was their language of instruction in their previous course.
  • Students having the equivalent of 60 ECTS credits from the US,  English speaking parts of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or Jamaica. 
  • Students coming from Africa who have a 3-year Bachelor's degree from these countries: Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Eritrea, Zambia, Zimbabwe. 
  • Students coming from India or Pakistan have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Medicine, Pharmacy, Natural Sciences, or Technology - documented that the language of instruction was English.
