  • B.Sc Physics

  • Physics is the cornerstone of technical progress; its findings have shaped our worldview. In the language of mathematics, it describes the laws of nature. Hamburg Physics is an internationally renowned department with a wide range of research focuses: elementary particle and accelerator physics, solid-state and nanostructure physics, laser physics and photonics, astronomy and astrophysics.

The bachelor's degree provides theoretical and experimental principles and lays the foundation for a broad general education in physics. The students get to know aspects of current research and its methods right from the start. The training is supplemented by specialist areas and the teaching of key qualifications. A special feature in the first year of study is the combination of theoretical and experimental training in joint modules.

  • Course structure

  • The bachelor's degree program comprises six semesters. A study of the mathematical and physical basics is followed by an introduction to the various physical disciplines with special attention to the research focus of Hamburg's physics. The courses are divided as modules into the following areas:

  • Acquisition of physical basics:Physics I-III: Basics of physics in lectures, exercises and practical courses on experimental physics (mechanics and thermodynamics; electrodynamics and optics; quantum physics and statistical physics). In the first two semesters supplemented by lectures to introduce theoretical physics.

Experimental physics: In-depth knowledge of the main research topics with lectures, exercises and a seminar on solid-state physics, nucleus and particle physics, atom-molecule and laser physics as well as a practical course for advanced students.Theoretical physics: in-depth knowledge of the main research topics with lectures, exercises and introductory seminars on theoretical mechanics and electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, statistics and thermodynamics.Oral exams: The oral exams in Experimental Physics and Theoretical Physics are used to process knowledge to achieve a comprehensive understanding.Bachelor thesis: The students familiarize themselves with a research topic that they then work on under supervision. The time required is approximately three months. Acquisition of mathematical basics:Mathematics I-IV for physicists: Insight into the structure of mathematics for natural sciences, with the aim of mastering mathematical methods safely on the basis of a good understanding of mathematical theories.Acquisition of interdisciplinary content:General professional skills: These include computer applications, foreign language skills, communication skills, presentation and lecture techniques, social skills and the ability to work in a team.Elective area: You can choose from the entire range of events at the university outside of the field of physics or the basics of astronomy and astrophysics. The students should follow their inclinations and interests.
  • Career prospects
  • The bachelor's degree is a prerequisite for in-depth scientific training in the master’s degree in physics, which is usually followed by a doctorate. The job market offers very good opportunities and the job description is very diverse: Physicists work in almost all areas of industry and business that place special demands on analytical, systematic and creative skills. In addition, the bachelor's degree enables an early entry into professional life with typical occupational fields in production monitoring, physical measured value acquisition, the establishment / support of EDP systems as well as sales, organizational and examination tasks in research institutes, industry and government administration.
