  • Bachelor In Law

  • The program offers fundamental training in law which gives access to the profession of lawyer or notary, taking into account the conditions set by professional orders. It gives future lawyers the tools to defend and promote the rights of individuals and groups, such as unions or non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

    Particular attention is paid to the phenomenon of globalization in the legal field, so that graduates can work according to international standards and forums in both domestic and international law.

    The first year is devoted to the study of major areas of law (criminal, constitutional, international, etc.). This general training continues in the second year, during which the student can undertake a series of complementary courses. The third year gives way to synthesis and critical approaches courses, which is specific to UQAM.

    The compulsory courses allow students to acquire fundamental knowledge in law as well as to develop skills specific to legal work.

    The program makes it possible to tackle contemporary legal phenomena and issues through two approaches. Thus the series of courses and activities entitled Critical and multidisciplinary approach allows the student to broaden the framework of the analysis of the foundations of the fields of law and legal contexts which interest him. The Clinical Practice and Socio-Legal Intervention Approach series allows, in various legal contexts, the development of skills relating to conflict management, advocacy, socio-legal intervention, promotion of rights and advocacy. public interest.

    Complementary courses allow students to individualize their training by choosing courses participating in five legal universes:

  • Public law: State, governance and public interest;
  • Private, property and business law;
  • Socio-legal issues;
  • Social and labor law;
  • International law, comparative law and legal cultures

  • Goals

  • The socio-economic objective of the Bachelor of Laws program is the training of jurists who will be concerned with social justice. To this end, these jurists will be able to intervene widely in the promotion and defense of the rights of individuals, indigenous peoples and groups (community organizations, unions, citizens' committees) who pursue development objectives of an economic, environmental, social nature. and cultural. These lawyers will be able to do so, from local to international.

    To this end, the program pursues the following specific objectives:

    1. L'acquisition par l'étudiant d'une connaissance des concepts, des règles et des principes fondamentaux du droit qui lui assure une bonne formation générale et une connaissance particulière de secteurs d'interventions privilégiés par l'objectif socio-économique du programme. L'étudiant doit être capable de bien repérer les règles de droit, de les analyser et d'en faire la synthèse;

    2. Le développement chez l'étudiant d'une capacité d'analyse critique du droit. L'étudiant doit être capable de questionner les règles de droit, d'en percevoir les dimensions historiques, politiques et socio-économiques et d'en comprendre les fondements et les fonctions dans la société;

    3. La maîtrise par l'étudiant d'habiletés pratiques qui lui permettront d'utiliser adéquatement le droit dans le traitement de problèmes concrets. L'étudiant doit être capable de bien qualifier juridiquement les problèmes qui lui sont posés, d'identifier les règles de droit applicables, d'en mesurer l'impact en regard des intérêts en jeu et des résultats désirés, de proposer des solutions appropriées, de structurer une argumentation qui les sous-tende et d'en faire l'exposé de façon écrite et orale.

    To achieve these objectives, the program uses a pedagogy that is based on activities in which the student is required to play a very active role in his training (preparatory readings for lessons, questions and discussions during lessons or in supervision workshops, work practical cases and case law analyzes, clinical and research activities) and it favors teamwork as a mode of learning.

  • Particularities

  • The program offers new practical legal activities in order to respond to new alternative modes of conflict resolution or participatory justice, in family matters, among others.
  • Linked to professional reality, this training covers all areas of law - civil, criminal, commercial, constitutional, administrative, international, labor, social, judicial, rights and freedoms - in addition to offering more specialized courses, in particular in environmental law and prison law.
  • Successful completion of the baccalaureate gives access to the École du Barreau and to graduate studies in notarial law.
  • The program has specific objectives, in particular the critical analysis of legal rules.
  • About ten courses deal with the international dimension of law, allowing the acquisition of knowledge increasingly sought after by companies.
  • The program allows for a very flexible path. It can be taken part-time, up to a limit of six years. All fundamental courses and some optional courses are offered day and night.
  • The Faculty of Political Science and Law regularly welcomes renowned and even prestigious visiting professors, such as Mr. Peter Leuprecht, who was Director of Human Rights and then Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
  • The student actively participates in his training through preparatory readings for the courses, class discussions, practical work of analysis of jurisprudential cases and clinical and research activities.
  • The student can carry out one or other of the following activities promoting experiences and professional development: an essay competition, a simulation activity, a national or international moot court competition, an internship in a court, a private practice office, a community organization or an international organization or an international tribunal (an internship bank is offered for this purpose), participation in the legal clinic or in a Pro Bono activity (the premises of which are located off the site of University). The student can work there for eight months to learn how to manage a legal practice, provide legal information and develop partnerships with surrounding community organizations. These practical trainings are not remunerated.
  • The program administration does not grant recognition of prior learning for college paralegal courses or for law certificate courses from other universities.
  • Members of indigenous communities can use the admission basis on the experience dedicated to them

Entry Requirement

Application Process

  • The institute has 6 faculties and 1 school through which offers knowledge in study areas such as arts, communication, political science and law, science, education science and humanities. It has highly educated staff members as well.

  • Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the fall 2020 session will be conducted mainly online and remotely.
  • International applicants have to fulfill some additional requirements along with the general requirements which are usually the same as the requirements for the applicants belonging to the United States.

  • Basic Admission Requirements:

  • Official transcripts of all the previously attended educational institutions.
  • Transcripts must be translated into English or French.
  • Students will be required to prove their proficiency in the French language.

  • Copy of passport.

  • There are some departmental requirements as well that must be fulfilled.

    English Proficiency Test Score

    The courses at UQAM are offered in the French language. Foreign students are required to prove their proficiency in the French language. The minimum requirements for various French-language proficiency tests for admission in different undergraduate courses are given below. If the applicants have less than the given scores than his or her application will be straightaway rejected.
