Who doesn’t need a student visa for studying in Norway?

  • International Students coming from Denmark, Iceland, Sweden or Finland do not require any visa to study in Norway. However, if they are enrolled in a course that has a duration of more than 6 months,  they must report to a tax office in Norway for an ID check and to report their move to Norway.
  • Students coming from countries within the European Economic Area (EEA) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) can study in Norway for up to 90 days without applying for a student visa.

Please note that these students have to obtain a student residence permit if they want to stay in Norway for longer than 90 days. 

Who does need a student visa for Norway?

Except for the above-mentioned students, all others are required to apply for a student residence permit if they are planning to study in Norway for more than 3 months. If these students are studying in Norway for less than 3 months, they will need to obtain a visa.

  • You can connect with your nearest Norwegian Embassy or Consulate for details on the student visa or student residence permit application process, and apply from your country of origin.
  • You can apply for the visa online from within Norway or through a Norwegian embassy. Most of the students will need to hand in a paper application form to their closest Norwegian embassy or consulate.

How to apply for Norway student visa?

The process of obtaining a student visa/ residence permit in Norway is simple and straightforward. Here are the steps you need to follow:

  • First, get acceptance from the University of Norway
  • Once you are enrolled, start collecting all your documents required for the Norwegian Visa Application. The document requirements are mentioned in the latter part of the section.
  • As soon as you are ready with the documents, apply online for the visa/ residence permit.
  • Next, you have to pay the visa fee. 
  • It takes time for visa processing. You will have to wait till the decision is out.
  • If you are successful in your application process. You will get your student residence permit/visa.
  • Once you arrive in Norway,  you have to visit the nearest police station within 7 days. There you will have to submit your fingerprints and photo. Your residence card will be sent by post within 10 working days.

Requirements to get a student visa for Norway

Requirements for the documents for getting a student residence permit will depend on your country of origin. To obtain approval for the student visa for Norway, you must be enrolled in a field of study at a higher education institute in Norway. If your application is approved, you will be able to obtain a residence card. It will be issued by your local police station in Norway. This document will give the right to live in Norway.

Proof of financial viability for a Norwegian visa

You will need to provide proof of sufficient financial funds for the entire study period to obtain a student residence permit. This should also include funds to support any accompanying family. You need to prove approximately NOK 116,370 for each academic year (US$14,350).
 
The funds must be in a Norwegian bank account. It can be a little complicated to open an account in a Norwegian bank without a Norwegian personal number.  As an alternative option, you can deposit the required funds into an account opened by your university. 

How much will I have to pay for the student visa for Norway?

To apply for the Student Residence Permit for Norway, you will have to pay a fee of 5608 NOK (556 EUR). Depending on your case, the authorities will allow you to pay this fee online, on location at a visa application centre, or through a bank transfer. The Visa processing fee is around 211 NOK (21 EUR).

How much time will it take to get my Norway student visa?

As soon as you have been accepted in your chosen university in Norway, you can start your application for the Norwegian Residence Permit for Studies.
