  • Welcome to the Department of Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies (SMF) at SJU. SMF provides students with opportunities to explore the research and theory about human sexuality and relationships from a wide range of disciplines and across the humanities and social sciences. Many courses in SMF adopt a social justice perspective that challenges students to think critically, beyond disciplinary borders, and in a self-reflective manner.

  • The goal of SMF is to promote interdisciplinary scholarship and research in fields such as gender, sexualities, relationships, and families. A solid, interdisciplinary understanding of sexuality from a broad range of theoretical perspectives and the social institutions linked to individuals and their intimate relationships provides an excellent foundation for historical, theoretical, and ethical discussions around many exciting topics. Such topics include, but are not limited to, the role of major discourses (e.g., media, law, medicine, religion) in shaping our perspectives on sexuality and relationships, the ways that our identities are formed and how these shape our interactions in the world, and the role of education around sexuality and relationships in Canada and the broader global context.

  • In particular, the program in SMF addresses human interactions within relational, sexual, and societal contexts. It examines basic anatomical knowledge and sexual health, as well as the formation and maintenance of relationships, parenting skills, and the impact of culture on sexual and family-related values, ideas, and attitudes. Issues that are rarely discussed in secondary education are more deeply explored. For instance, course topics include: the impact of media on our understanding of gender, sexuality, and relationships; sexuality education; attitudes toward sexualities; the effects of pornography on societal attitudes; family conflict and its escalation to violence; sexual problems or difficulties; and couple, family, and sex therapy. In our course offerings, special attention is paid to developing an ethical perspective and considering issues of social justice in order to develop autonomy and professional capacity for responsible citizenship.
