  • Bachelor of Mathematics

  • The baccalaureate in mathematics is aimed above all at those who wish to acquire a university education providing them with a precise understanding of contemporary mathematical tools used in various careers where quantitative methods play an important role. Some will be passionate about mathematics wanting to contribute to their development through basic or applied research, while others will want to learn the language and mathematical thinking necessary to create models in various human and natural sciences. In each case, the acquired and transferable skills are in high demand in the labor market.

The program therefore has, above all, two main objectives: the first is to create a new generation of scientists whose general training is centered on the rigor of reasoning, the development of the analytical mind and the ability to conceive and manipulate mathematical models. The second is to allow a gradual specialization according to the objectives of each student which will lead, as the case may be, to the pursuit of higher studies in mathematics or in a related field or to a job after graduation.

The baccalaureate in mathematics combines two concentrations: mathematics and statistics. The first year is common to both concentrations so that the transition from one concentration to another is relatively easy during the first year and a half.

The "mathematics" concentration offers the most advanced and general training possible in mathematics since all areas of mathematics are covered. It is the key to access various master's or doctoral programs in mathematics. Through courses chosen in other well-targeted fields, the mathematics concentration also opens the door to certain master's programs (engineering, applied finance, scientific communication, etc.) as well as to various jobs. The first two years of this concentration being equivalent to a major in mathematics, it is possible, after two years of the baccalaureate, to broaden your undergraduate training in mathematics by opting for the choice "major and minor / certificate" in another domain of studies (economics, computer science, communication, etc.); on this subject, see the major in mathematics program.

The "statistics" concentration offers training for the student wishing to qualify to work in a work environment using statistical methods and tools, or to continue to graduate studies with a view to becoming a professional statistician or researcher in statistics. The statistical concentration of the baccalaureate allows the student to learn mathematics and to acquire more in-depth training in classical statistical subjects and the related computer techniques. By completing this study program, the student can obtain, under certain conditions, the Associate Statistician (A.Stat.) Qualification from the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) indicating that the holder has completed a program of studies equivalent to a major or a bachelor's degree in statistics. In addition, the first two years of this concentration being equivalent to a major in statistics, it is possible, after two years of the baccalaureate, to expand your undergraduate training in statistics by opting for the choice "major and minor / certificate" in another field of study (economics, computer science, communication, etc.); on this subject, see the program of the major in statistics. IT, communication, etc.); on this subject, see the program of the major in statistics. IT, communication, etc.); on this subject, see the program of the major in statistics.

To obtain accreditation from the SSC, the student of statistics will have to, in addition to successful statistics courses with a minimum grade of B- (b minus), choose at least three courses in one area of specialization, or two courses in two areas of specialization. These fields must correspond to fields of application of statistics (see statistical concentration).
  • Particularities

  • This training offers a balance between theory and practice. Most courses include three hours of theory and two hours of problem-solving sessions facilitated by a master's or doctoral student.
  • New information and communications technologies (NICT) are integrated into the training. In particular, the Web provides access to course notes, exercises as well as homework and exam questionnaires.
  • Research initiation grants are awarded to students from funds such as NSERC, or those of research laboratories (for example, LACIM and CIRGET).
  • Outside of school hours, teachers are also very available for tutoring and additional explanations.
  • The statistical concentration of this program meets the training requirements of the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC): it is thus possible to obtain the A.Stat grade. of the SSC; to be eligible, however, students must complete their training with specialization courses in other fields and have the required results.
  • The baccalaureate in mathematics is the regular route to access master's degrees in mathematics, statistics and financial mathematics. Other 2nd cycle programs are accessible from the baccalaureate in mathematics, such as the DESS in bioinformatics.
  • Our baccalaureate graduates rank very well in national scholarship competitions, and successfully pursue studies both at UQAM and at other Canadian or foreign universities. For example, recent graduates of the statistical concentration continued their studies at the University of Oxford or at the École Polytechnique de Lausanne, while recent graduates of the mathematics concentration continued in Moscow, at MIT or at Indiana University.
  • The Department of Mathematics offers theoretical and professional training in all areas of mathematical activity, which is exclusive to UQAM: mathematics, statistics, computer science and mathematics (jointly with the Department of Computer Science), didactics, financial mathematics and actuarial science.
  • Lectures are regularly given by renowned researchers or representatives of the labor market. These seminars cover, among other things, the various fields of mathematics, theoretical computer science, and statistics.

Entry Requirement

  • Applicants must have passed 12th
  • Applicants must have completed one year of university studies including mathematics (first year of study) or else they need to attend preparatory year at UdeM
