  • Bachelor of History

  • The program conveys knowledge about ancient, modern and contemporary societies to the student. He studies their evolution by approaching different periods and themes. The first year is devoted to the introductory course in historical work and the eight introductory courses of the common core.

Path A includes ten other history courses and one research course (acronym HIS5000), while path B includes nine other history courses and two research courses (signed HIS6001 - Research activity and HIS6002 - Research activity ).

Whichever option is chosen, the program ends with one or two research courses in smaller groups (between ten and thirty students) and two course-workshops (for example, on medieval or Quebec historiography, aspects of cultural history in modern-day Europe or the decolonization of Indochina and Algeria). These seminar-type activities make it possible to apply the knowledge acquired through the analysis of a historiographical problem and the use of sources.
  • Goals

  • The baccalaureate and major in history provide knowledge about ancient, modern and contemporary societies and study their evolution by approaching various periods while focusing on different themes. Beyond the basic historical culture, they develop the acquisition of a specific working method, involving the mastery of techniques specific to various historical approaches and highly appreciated in a good number of professional circles, linked or not to history. They also develop the capacities of analysis and synthesis as well as the aptitudes to communicate orally and in writing a historical knowledge. They prepare students for higher education and promote reflection on the production of historical knowledge and on the profession of historian.

The bachelor's program in history (without minor) is structured around a common core promoting a graduated approach in the learning of knowledge and providing a first overview of the evolution of Western civilization; the introductory courses allow the mastery of the highlights, the most significant changes and the main issues of various societies in different spatio-temporal contexts. The baccalaureate ends with two course-workshops and a research laboratory which is a preparation for second cycle work.

The major in history provides the student with a base of twenty history courses to which the student can add a minor or a certificate of his choice.
