  • MSc in Physical Therapy

  • The Department of Physical Therapy is part of the University of Alberta Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, the only free-standing faculty of its kind in North America. Housed in historic Corbett Hall in Edmonton, the Department of Physical Therapy has expanded to include a satellite program at the University of Calgary Downtown Campus in Calgary.

    Over the course of its 50-year history, the Department has consistently been recognized for professional, scholarly and academic excellence, and has established a reputation as one of the premier Physical Therapy programs in North America.

    Our faculty members are outstanding teachers as well as internationally recognized researchers. They are committed to preparing physical therapists to enhance the health of persons within our community and the larger global environment.

    As a research-intensive university, we support evidence-based practices and a balanced education that includes quality learning in the classroom and lab as well as hands-on experience through clinical placements and student clinics. We also adopt teaching technology that has been proven effective, including simulation labs, e-learning and state-of-the-art clinical equipment.

    Our Department is also committed to lifelong learning and as such, conducts annual continuing education opportunities that are designed to bring relevant contemporary programs to campus.

    Research

    A research leader in musculoskeletal health, spinal cord injuries, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, chronic pain management, and seniors' health; we are the destination of choice for rehabilitation professionals, researchers, students and scientists.

    The Department of Physical Therapy boasts three research chairs: two Canada Research Chairs and one other endowed research chair funded by philanthropic gifts. Our three research chair holders are impacting the community and the world by conducting translational research in our Department's environment of exploration, discovery, and scholarship.

    The Department of Physical Therapy is proud of its connections with other universities and rehabilitation organizations and associations worldwide. We have taken part in the planning and development of various physical therapy programs in other countries. Our involvement with international communities will increase as we share our knowledge and not only connect our faculty, but also our students and future scientists.

Entry Requirement


  • Applicant must have a bachelor degree.

Application Process


  • Approximately 86 students will study at the Edmonton Campus 24 at the Calgary Campus. Admission into any of our campuses is based on the same criteria and standards.
  • Preference will be given to residents of Alberta. A minimum of 15% of the available seats will be offered to out-of-province and international applicants.
  • Applicants who meet all the application requirements will be ranked for an interview (MMI) based on their GPA in the most recent 60 credits taken prior to February of the admission year. Physical Activity and Studio courses will not be used in the calculation of an applicant's GPA. Neither will Practicums, Field Experience, or Work Terms.
  • The top 30% (approximate) will be offered an interview (which will be scored).
  • A weighting of 50% interview and 50% GPA will be used.
  • The final grade in an approved anatomy course must show on the transcript at time of application. Other prerequisite courses can show as in-progress on the transcript at time of application. Applicants offered conditional admission (see below) must provide a final transcript showing prerequisite course completion by June 1st.
  • Applicants who are ranked high on their GPA score and MMI, but who remain in the process of completing the pre-requisites and/or degree, will be made a conditional offer. The requirements and deadlines of the conditional offer will be determined by the Department of Physical Therapy (University of Alberta Calendar, 203.2.2, (2) c.)

    Official documents (transcripts, degree certificates, etc.) may be required upon receiving the conditional offer of admission letter from the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR). Documents must be sent directly from the post-secondary institution to the FGSR office.
