Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology
-
Have a passion for building? Civil Engineering Technology is a 2-year diploma program or 2-and-a-half year co-op diploma program through which you’ll learn how to design and manage construction, infrastructure and research projects.
Our curriculum has been developed with industry input to ensure we cover all of the theoretical and practical elements that are essential within the broad field of civil engineering. With the help of hands-on learning and supportive, experienced instruction, you’ll apply computer-aided design & drafting (CADD) systems to civil engineering problems in the areas of:
- structural design
- urban services design
- highway design
- pavement design
- geotechnical design
- project management
- applied research
-
The Civil Engineering Technology program is delivered through classroom lectures, computer labs, geotechnical labs and field surveying. We pride ourselves on providing you with supportive instruction in small classes led by knowledgeable instructors who have years of experience working in industry.
You can expect to spend on average 27 hours per week attending classes and labs over the course of the 2-year program, and approximately 20-45 hours per week studying, completing assignments and doing research.
Practicum/co-op/work experience
After your first semester of the Civil Engineering Technology program, you’ll have the option to apply for its co-op component.
If you’re accepted into the co-op program, you will work with a consulting engineering firm, civil engineering department or a building and infrastructure contracting firm. The scope of work may include planning, design, testing, inspection and supervision.
This work placement will provide you with practical work experience that will help you connect program theory to real-world application, help you develop your career skills and professionalism, and provide networking opportunities, setting you up for success after graduation.
30 students will be selected for the Co-Op Educational Stream based on academic achievement and need for work experience before graduation. The total length of the co-op program stream is 2.5 years, which includes 63 weeks of academic training and two 24-week work placements. Work placements occur from May through October.

Career Opportunities
-
Civil Engineering Technology graduates find employment with various municipal, provincial and federal government departments, and with engineering consultants, general contractors and construction companies.
Upon graduation you may find a position as a lab technologist testing construction materials such as soil, concrete and asphalt. Or you may find employment as a civil engineering technologist in fields of surveying, estimating and project management, and/or as a specialist in computer-aided design & drafting (CADD).
As a civil engineering technologist, your expertise could be used in offices and laboratories, and on construction sites. The scope of your work may include planning, design, drafting, testing, surveying, inspecting, supervising or administration of construction.
Your education could also help you advance your career down the road. Opportunities for advancement include supervisory or administrative positions such as:
- construction superintendents
- project or town engineering technologists
- technical supervisors
- testing services supervisors
- chief estimators
- project inspectors
- public works managers
- technical and specification writers
