BA - Canadian Studies

Welcome to Canadian Studies

Canadian Studies is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary program that spans Canadian culture and society past, present, and future. You’ll gain a greater understanding of our country, and our place in the international community. You’ll study Canadian values, politics, history, art, economics, and literature. You’ll explore and debate a variety of topics such as the art of the Group of Seven, First Nations Governance, and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

You’ll be inspired to participate in shaping the future of Canada. You’ll have a wide range of career options to choose from, including teaching, journalism, foreign affairs, library science, social activism, law, public administration, politics, cultural arts coordination, public relations, and business.

Why take Canadian Studies at MSVU?

The Canadian studies program at Mount Saint Vincent University is the oldest and best-established undergraduate Canadian Studies program in Nova Scotia. Our small enrollment limits for upper-year classes (CANA 3301 and CANA 4401, have enrollment limits of 25 and 15, respectively) means that there are chances for class discussion, and getting to know your classmates.

In addition, there are plenty of resources available to our students outside of the classroom. You can have close contact with your professors and are able to ask them for help and guidance. There is also the Canadian Studies Student Society, which brings former and current students together for events and activities.

Finally, there are unique awards and opportunities for our students. We offer the Andrea and Charles R. Bronfman Award, which allows the recipient to spend a week in Ottawa on Parliament Hill. There are also year-long exchange programs with Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario
