The four areas of study support student success with industry-related certifications external to the program. Program faculty will provide guidance and information on the various certifications that are available and relevant to fitness and health professionals .
Over four semesters, you will progressively develop skills and knowledge in fitness assessment and exercise programming, nutrition, health promotion, leadership and self-development, business planning and lifestyle consulting. Field Placement opportunities will provide you with workplace experience supervised by trained professionals and leaders in the fitness industry. Placements can be tailored to your specific career goals or future university plans. For example, students have requested placements in hospitals, corporate sites, fitness facilities, chiropractic or physiotherapy settings, and non-profit organizations such as Diabetes Canada and Osteoporosis Canada. Class sizes are small and your learning environments feature the latest equipment, technology and facilities, including the state-of-the-art Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre, located on Fleming College campus grounds.
DUAL DIPLOMA OPTION: BROADEN YOUR CAREER OPTIONS IN THE RECREATION AND FITNESS SECTOR.
The Fitness and Health Promotion and Recreation and Leisure Services programs have shared a common first year since the launch of the Dual Diploma Option in 2017. The option allows you to discover what areas of these health-related industries best suit your goals. In this foundation year, you'll benefit from expanded learning outcomes that are only available at Fleming and select colleges that offer this pathway. You’ll increase your skill base, and you could earn a dual diploma in just five semesters. Students are not locked into one career stream and don't have to decide until the end of semester four to pursue the fifth semester dual diploma option. For details, contact the program coordinator.
