The Beinecke Scholarship Program

OVERVIEW

For graduate study in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, the Beinecke Scholarship enables highly motivated students of exceptional promise to pursue opportunities available to them and to be courageous in the selection of a graduate course of study.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Nomination by Stanford through Undergraduate Advising and Research
  • A junior who is pursuing a bachelors degree during the 2017-18 academic year*
  • A major in the  Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences strongly preferred
  • A student intending to enter a master's or doctoral program in the Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences
  • A student with demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement and personal promise
  • A US citizen or US National from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
  • A student in need of financial aid, and with a documented history of receiving need-based financial aid during undergraduate years
    • Primary evidence of meeting this criterion is history of receiving need-based institutional, state, or federal grants-in-aid
    • The Beinecke Financial Data Sheet certifying that the student meets this criterion must be completed by a University financial aid officer
    • The amount of financial need will be one of the factors considered during the selection process, with preference being given to candidates for whom the awarding of a scholarship would significantly increase the likelihood of the student being able to attend graduate school

HOW TO APPLY

  • The following steps must be completed for an application to be considered for campus nomination:
  • Register with UAR to participate in the campus competition
  • Consult with your faculty mentors and the Beinecke campus liaison regarding the content and writing of your statement of purpose
  • Prepare an application package consisting of 5 copies each of the following:
  • Application
  • Current resume
  • For the campus deadline, provide an additional longer, annotated resume that provides rich details for the experiences/achievements that you list.
  • Personal statement in 1,000 words or less describing your background, interests, plans for graduate study, and career aspirations
  • Include experiences that have helped shape your interests, plans, and aspirations

1 copy each of the following:

  • Request an electronic version of all official college transcript(s) to be sent to vpue-fellowships@stanford.edu. If you can only obtain hard copies of a transcript, submit one original and five copies.
  • Financial Aid Form
  • Artist’s supplement (if appropriate)

2 letters of recommendation (original only)

  • it is recommended that you confer with the Beinecke campus liaison before finalizing your choices for recommendations
  • begin this process early to allow for creation and submission by deadline
  • letters may be submitted by the writer to vpue-fellowships@stanford.edu or in sealed hardcopy form to Sweet Hall, First Floor, Attention Fellowships
  • see Tips for soliciting letters of recommendation 
  • Submit your complete application package to the front desk on the first floor in Sweet Hall by the campus deadline
  • Sign the "Fellowship Nomination Permission Form and Waiver" at the front desk to complete the submission process
