New Zealand Development Scholarships

The scholarships include full tuition fees, a living allowance (paid fortnightly), an establishment allowance, medical and travel insurance, travel between your home country and New Zealand at the start and end of your scholarship, home leave or reunion travel for some eligible scholars, pastoral and academic support at your institution, and assistance with research and thesis costs for most postgraduate research students.

Eligibility:

Applicants must meet the following conditions to be eligible for a New Zealand Scholarship:

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencing your scholarship.
  • Be a citizen of the country from which you are applying for a scholarship and have resided in that country for at least the last two years.
  • Not a citizen or permanent resident of any the following countries: New Zealand, Australia, Israel, South Korea, Japan, USA, any European Union country, Qatar, United Kingdom, Canada, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. (Note: This criteria does not apply to people from Niue, Cook Islands, Tokelau who are New Zealand citizens, and it also does not apply to NZ-Samoan dual citizens.)
  • Meet the Immigration requirements for a student visa to New Zealand or the Pacific country you will study in (i.e. medical checks, etc.).
  • Meet the academic entry requirements (including English language ability) for your preferred programme of study and institution. Refer to the website of your preferred institution to confirm entry requirements.
  • Have at least one year full time (two-year’s part time) work experience relevant to your career and/or preferred qualification unless you are applying straight from school or during my first year of tertiary study (for countries offered undergraduate study).
  • Intend to return to your home country for a minimum of two years on completion of the scholarship.

Applications are currently closed.

  • Applications can be done online or paper-based depending on your country. Applicants from countries that are eligible for both online or paper-based applications, can apply from 1 February until 15 March 2017 (12pm NZ Time) while applicants from eligible countries that can only apply online can do so from 16 February until 30 March 2017 (12pm NZ Time). For New Zealand Commonwealth scholarships, only paper applications are accepted from 15 February to 30 March 2017.  Read the application schedule to know which countries can apply during which application period.
