Eligibility Open to students entering or continuing full-time graduate studies in a M.Sc. or Ph.D. program engaged in research to develop or apply methods to create, identify or select superior forage, cereal, oilseed, or pulse crops for commercial agriculture. 

Applicants must be Canadian citizens and have resided in Canada for a minimum of five years. 
Applicants must also have graduated with an undergraduate degree from a Canadian university and obtained a high academic standing (80% minimum cumulative GPA). In addition, students who have completed all their undergraduate studies at the University of Saskatchewan have the option (and only these students) of pursuing postgraduate work at any approved university in Canada or the United States. 

Preference will be given to students whose research proposal includes outdoor field research activity.

Please note that Master’s students shall not receive funding beyond the 36th month of the start of their program of studies; direct-entry PhD students and transfer PhD students shall not receive funding beyond the 60th month of the start of their program of studies (the start of the program of studies for transfer PhD students shall be when they are first registered in their 994 course).
Donor Dr. Robert P. Knowles, a world renowned forage crop breeder, had a 50-year distinguished career with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. As a result of his generous legacy, the University of Saskatchewan is able to award this scholarship (PhD or M.Sc.) through the Robert P. Knowles Scholarship Fund.

A full application package will consist of the following 5 items. These should be sent to the mailing address below:

  1. Cover letter (include your NSID);
  2. Up-to-date Curriculum Vitae;
  3. Outline (no more than 500 words) of the proposed research program and starting date;
  4. Official transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended other than the University of Saskatchewan. These must be issued and sent directly attn: Awards Officer, College of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies;
  5. Three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the student's academic work (in sealed envelopes signed across the flap).
