Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) are funded by the Australian Government and awarded by the University of Melbourne to students of exceptional research potential who undertake a graduate research degree. 

Eligibility

To be considered for the Australia Postgraduate Awards, you must:

  • be an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident, or the recipient of an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship;
  • not have previously held an APA for six months or more;
  • have completed tertiary studies that are at least equivalent to a 4-year honours degree at an Australian university with a minimum result of first class Honours;
  • have not already completed a research qualification at the same or higher level as the course for which a scholarship is sought. 
  • have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a Master by research or Doctoral (Research) degree at the University of Melbourne, or be currently enrolled in a research degree at the University of Melbourne and have at least 12 months  (full-time equivalent) of candidature remaining

The duration of the Australia Postgraduate Awards scholarship is two years for students undertaking a Master by research degree and three years, with a possible six month extension, for students undertaking a Doctoral (Research) degree.

The following benefits apply:

  • A fortnightly living allowance
  • Relocation grant for students moving to Melbourne from interstate or from outside Australia
  • Limited paid sick, maternity and parenting leave
