Selection Procedure for 3 IIM's Declared

with the declaration of cat 2015 and beginning of application procedure, iims have started declaring the admission criteria for the academic year 2016-18. cat 2015 is the entrance for admissions to all 19 iims, each having their own selection criteria to admit best from thousands of candidates who apply each year.

the indian institutes of management through their difficult selection process select the best lot of students for different coveted iims. as the iims have started declaring their selection process, let’s first broadly have a look to the selection process of iims.

iim admission process

the iim admission process is a two-step process

  • common admission test –cat, and
  • personal interview (pi) and written ability test (wat)

aspirants are first accepted on the basis of the cat cut-off percentiles, sectional as well as overall, along with past academic record and work experience. after shortlisting, the applicants are called for personal interview (pi) and written ability test (wat) rounds led by each of the iims. the selection at this round is depended on the performance at each stage of the round with past academic records, work experience, co-curricular activities and diversity factors (if applicable).

each constraint is allotted a particular importance on the basis of which the final merit list is organized. the considerations and their values differ with each of the iims.

from last couple of years, group discussion (gd) is being substituted by written ability test (wat). till last year iim calcutta and lucknow accompanied gd rounds as a part of their selection process, but from 2015 onwards, both the institutions have freed the gd rounds and now only have wat-pi as a part of their selection process.

some iims take cat score as a factor for assessment during both the shortlist stages of the admission process. however, iim indore does not give any importance to the cat score at the second phase to prepare the final selection list.

the 6 new iims, namely iim ranchi, raipur, rohtak, trichy, udaipur and kashipur organizes a common admission process (cap) in which qualified aspirants have to join in common wat and pi rounds. however, the merit list is confirmed individually by the iims. last year, i.e. for the admission in 2015-17 batch, the cap round was directed by iim udaipur.

at different phases of the admission process ‘application rating’ (ar) marks of a candidate will be used. an aspirant’s ar score is the addition of the rating scores ‘a’, ‘b’ and ‘c’ based on her/his percentage of marks obtained in 10th standard, 12th standard (liable upon the stream, viz., ‘science’, ‘commerce’ ‘arts & humanities’) and bachelor’s degree examinations (liable upon the discipline) respectively.

iim lucknow: as per the iim lucknow selection criteria for the pgp batch of 2016, there will be a 2 step procedure for qualifying and selecting the students. according to the iim lucknow selection criteria, this year the group discussion (gd) round will not be apprehended. the qualified aspirants will have to give written ability test (wat) and personal interview (pi) rounds. until last year, the organization led, gd, wat and pi rounds. after choosing the aspirants on the grounds of the cutoff, a merit list will be made based on the weights and factors. the cutoff for iim lucknow is 90 for the general category aspirants.

iim calcutta: iim calcutta has declared the selection criteria for the pgp-pgdm batch of 2016-18. the selection process includes 2 phases, choosing of aspirants based on cat 2015 scores followed by wat and pi rounds. the cutoff declared by iim calcutta for cat 2015 is 90+ for the academic year 2016-18. aspirants will be qualified on grounds of cat 2015 score, past academic performance and other criteria. the composite score is considered on the basis of cat 2015 score, class x and class xii total percentages, and gender assortment factor.
