  • Bachelor of Science in Biology

  • The bachelor's degree in biology teaches the basics of natural science in biology and the neighboring sciences, chemistry, physics and mathematics. The focus is primarily on the various sub-areas of biology: cell biology and biochemistry, evolution, genetics and molecular biology, physiology, morphology, systematics, microbiology, developmental biology and ecology. Especially within the compulsory elective area, students can specialize in biological topics, and a free elective area also enables insights into what is on offer at the entire University of Hamburg. The course is concluded with the examination module and the bachelor thesis.

  • The Bachelor of Science program in Biology can be divided into two phases:
  • 1st - 4th Semester: Basics from all sub-areas of biology as well as the natural sciences chemistry, physics and mathematics
  • 5th + 6th Semester: Specialization phase with advanced, in-depth courses in the elective and elective areas and the final thesis.

  • Career prospects
  • With a bachelor's degree in biology, graduates qualify for further studies (e.g. Master of Science) or entry into a career. Based on previous experience, it is advisable to join a master’s degree in order to increase career opportunities. There are a large number of, in some cases very specialized, master’s courses in Germany and abroad. Graduates with a focus on biodiversity and ecology have a job market in nature and environmental protection (authorities and associations), landscape planning, and museum and environmental education, among other things.
  • If the focus is on molecular biology and genetics, laboratories in non-university research institutions in the field of plant breeding, food research, pharmacy, etc. are a labor market. In addition, biologists work in quality management, sales and marketing (e.g. biotech or pharmaceutical companies), science journalism, public relations, editing and much more. Depending on the further qualifications, it is also possible to work as an expert or patent attorney.

  • University of Hamburg received 42,846 applications in 2019 for admission to its 70 bachelor’s and 95 master’s programs. These programs vary across seven faculties and provide courses in the field of Law, Medicine, Education, Psychology, Business Administration, among others.
