  • The Mathematics master's program leads to enrichment and specialization in mathematics and in a minor subject and particularly results in an intensification of independent scholarly work.
  • The Mathematik / Mathematics master's program leads to an enrichment and specialization in mathematics and in a minor subject and particularly results in an intensification of independent scholarly work.

The program is primarily research-oriented. However, students can accentuate the applied approach through individualized selection of a major topic. The enriched course of study in a minor subject guarantees that the use of mathematical methods is also reflected in an interdisciplinary context.

    Major topics

The in-depth lectures, seminars or internships are primarily in the fields of work represented by the department. These are:

  • Algebraic Lie Theory
  • Algebraic and Complex Geometry
  • Differential Geometry and Analysis
  • Discrete Mathematics
  • Numerical Mathematics and Optimization
  • Stochastics
  • For the choice of a minor subject is a large range of subjects to choose from. The most frequently chosen subjects are:

Business Administration, Biology, Geography, Computer Science, Physics, Political Economics.

    Objectives

The professional fields for mathematicians are very diverse and predominantly interdisciplinary. There are excellent professional prospects as a result of continually developing fields of work in which well-founded mathematics skills are required. Very interesting extra-disciplinary tasks are also frequently performed with success, because abstract-logical capabilities for analyzing and solving a problem are also of great benefit in other areas and particularly support innovative processes.

Successful graduates of the Mathematik / Mathematics master's program are also found outside of universities and research institutions, in practically all areas of industry and the economy. Mathematicians are sought after particularly in software development, in banks and insurance companies and management consulting.

A particularly successful master's program also enables access to a doctorate – principally in mathematics.

Entry Requirement

  • Applicant must have a bachelor degree.

Application Process

  • Required university degree

Certification of a degree from a discipline-relevant bachelor's program in the field of Mathematics or certification of a comparable domestic or foreign qualifying university degree.

In addition to the Bachelor's in Mathematics, a degree for a secondary school teaching program (first state examination or Master's) with Mathematics as the subject area entitles the student to be admitted to the program. A Bachelor's in another discipline qualifies for admission if at least 90 credit points have been completed in modules in which competencies at the level of the basic and required modules of the Marburg Bachelor's program in Mathematics have been acquired. The student must have completed the professionally qualifying university degree with an overall grade of at least 7.9 points.

Certifications of program-specific knowledge and skills to be submitted prior to admission German skills:
    DSH 2

    Other language skills:

Skills in the English language according to Language Level B2 of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe" is recommended.
