The degree course in Advanced Anglophone Studies is very varied. It defines the term “text” broadly to include films and new media, and uses a range of methodological approaches. Political and cultural aspects are brought into focus, and literature is treated as a historical phenomenon whose aesthetic forms interpret the cultural conditions under which they came about.
Topics studied could include: Black and Asian cultures in Great Britain and the USA, postcolonial literatures in the Caribbean, Africa and India, transatlantic relations or the American documentary film and its functions, but also Shakespeare, Milton or Jane Austen. The programme is rounded off by language classes and courses on presentation techniques, for example on how to set up a website.
As part of the degree course, students are expected to spend some time abroad, and to absolve an internship in a relevant professional area. The stay abroad can be either as an internship in an English-speaking country or as a period of study, for example in the shape of a research trip or a summer school.
