  • Diploma in Theatre Atrs
  • FEATURES:

  • Practicum provides work experience and industry contacts
  • Participate in professional UFV theatre productions and gain hands on experience
  • Program eligible for financial aid
  • The Theatre diploma is a 60-credit program that introduces students to all areas of theatre, including acting, stagecraft, and performance studies. All students enrolled in the diploma gain applied, practical experience by working on UFV Theatre productions.

The Theatre diploma is for anyone interested in learning more about theatre, the performing arts, or performance studies. It is suitable for people from a wide range of backgrounds, including direct-entry from high school, international students, mature students, adults who wish to access life-long learning opportunities, and Indigenous students. Applicants do not need to have theatre experience.

Students graduate from the Theatre diploma with enhanced performance and stagecraft skills, a deep appreciation of theatre and performance, and the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively. Students can ladder into the BA Theatre Major, extended minor, or minor.

  • CAREER EXPECTATIONS

  • Because most jobs in the performing arts are short-term assignments, most actors, directors, and producers are self-employed. Hiring a reputable agent to represent you can help boost your success.

Mastering special skills such as dancing, singing, playing a musical instrument, acrobatics, juggling, horseback riding, sword fighting, archery, martial art, or stunt work can open additional employment opportunities.

Jobs also exist in related areas such as stage management, set or costume design, event promotion, lighting or sound management, scriptwriting, stunt coordination, fundraising, commercial video production, and more.

Many theatre grads also use the communication, teamwork, and management skills they have acquired to excel in other fields such as business, public relations, advertising, hospitality, arts administration, or education.

Application Process

  • B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent, or minimum 19 years of age before the first day of classes.
  • Students with university-level credit must have a grade point average of 2.00 on all credits attempted. Transcripts must be submitted to substantiate this.

    When to apply

Applications are accepted for entrance to the Fall and Winter semesters. For application deadlines, see Specific intake application process.

Additional documents required for a complete application:

    • Proof of B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent.
    • Official transcripts (or interim transcripts) from all post-secondary institutions attended showing grade/course achievement as per entrance requirements. To be considered official, transcripts must be sent directly to UFV from the originating institution; see the Transfer Credit section for details. To retain their original application date, students should order early so transcripts arrive within two weeks of the date the application is mailed or submitted.
  • Students who have attended a post-secondary institution must submit an official transcript (sealed envelope) for each institution attended, whether or not they have completed courses there.
  • Upon admission to the program applicants will be provided with registration information. A deposit is required prior to registration (see the Fees and Other Costs section) and will be applied toward tuition fees.
  • In cases where interim transcripts are submitted, an admission decision may be made conditional upon completion of academic requirements. Proof of completion of entrance requirements are due the beginning of August.
