  • Diploma in Child and Youth Care
  • The Child and Youth Care program prepares individuals to provide care and treatment for children or adolescents experiencing a range of social, emotional, behavioral, or learning challenges.
  • Child and Youth Counsellors (CYCs) are involved in all facets of care from intake, to assessment, to program planning, to goal formulation, and intervention. Practitioners provide assistance through a variety of treatment strategies and work as an integral part of a treatment team. Child Youth Counsellors team up with teachers, social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists as well as other social services providers to deliver a holistic approach to caregiving.

  • This program ensures that you will acquire the necessary skills for employment as a Child and Youth Care ​Practitioner and it is fully ​acredited by ​the Child and Youth Care Educational Accreditation Board of Canada (CYCEAB).
  • Fleming is one of the few institutions in Canada and abroad that have completed and earned accreditation.
  • Three work placements provide varied practical experience and ample opportunity to hone skills to interact with this often challenging client group.
  • Courses include innovative and best practices required by the industry, such as trauma-informed practice and treating the family, as well as group dynamics, counselling, advocacy, legislation, crisis intervention, and family dynamics.
  • The philosophy of the program is to be thoroughly involved with the individual, using everyday occurrences as learning opportunities for growth and empowerment. The curriculum also encourages self-reflective practice of personal values, beliefs, attitudes and assumptions relating to human behavior and relationships. You will also learn self-care strategies to help navigate the impact of working in this sector.

    Upon successful completion of this program, graduates will be eligible to join the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Counsellors.

  • WORK EXPERIENCE

    Placements can take place locally or outside the Peterborough area. Placements are integrated with seminars to provide extra support and direction to students during the three placement experiences. The program provides over 1200 hours of placement experience and preparation.

    CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

    As a Child and Youth Counsellor, you can find employment in a variety of community-based organizations, public and private workplaces, including human service agencies, educational settings, health facilities, and recreational/ sports facilities. The increased need for CYWs in residential care settings has resulted in an accelerated hiring rate for locations such as group homes, residential and day treatment programs in children's mental health centres, and treatment residences. CYWs work with a diverse range of people and personal circumstances, including:

  • Sir Sandford Fleming College, commonly known as Fleming College is a renowned institution of technology and applied arts in Canada. The institution offers admissions to more than 100 diverse programs at levels ranging from the degree, the diploma to the certificate. The college was established in 1967 and presently this higher education institute in Canada welcomes international students from more than 33 countries across the globe.

     

    The college has more than 6800 full-time students and is based in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. The academy is one of the top 50 research colleges in Canada. Fleming College has not revised any dates for application due to the pandemic situation. However, they have switched to the online mode of application. 

    While applying for admission, the students can apply for accommodations in the Frost Campus or Sutherland Campus. Taking admission to courses at Fleming College requires some non-academic requirements. These are Immunization is required for some courses and Additional requirements like first aid, CPR, or criminal reference check are needed. 

    Fleming College Admissions: Changes Due to COVID-19

  • Due to the current pandemic situation, Canada is favoring the applications of people who are returning to Canada, vulnerable people, and people working in service industries in Canada.
  • Since July 1st, they will be processing all online visitor visas and eTA applications.
  • Applicants are required to have a quarantine plan for 14 days which is mandatory.

  • A valid passport and other travel documents.
