Of all the English language tests taken worldwide, Test of English as Foreign Language or TOEFL, along with IELTS, is some of the most taken exams. The test is an individual’s assessment of ability to speak, read, listen and write English. In short, for the candidates who are looking for a proof of their English language proficiency, TOEFL is the way to go. The test is sometimes criticized for its length, and that is exactly what ETS, the organizing and the owner of the test is trying to modify. Here is everything you need to know about the changes in Exam patterns and scoring systems.

Changes Introduced in TOEFL Exam Pattern and Scoring System

Changes in TOEFL Exam Pattern and Syllabus:

As we have mentioned, the TOEFL is one of the longer English language tests. Infact, where the IELTS has a time duration of 2 hours 45 minutes (and 11 to 20 minutes more for the speaking module on a different day), the TOEFL runs for 4 hours on one single day. That can be exhaustive for a number of candidates, as there are different modules and different types of questions asked for a long duration, constantly.

Coming this August, the scenario is about to change. Below mentioned are the changes to be implemented from the August 1, which will make the test a little more compact, and TOEFL is claiming that it will make the overall experience of the test better for the candidates. The TOEFL Time Duration will be reduced by 30 minutes.

1. Reading:

The number of the reading passages will be the same as before. There will be 3 to 4 passages, the changes are for the number of the questions with each passage. There will be a total of 10 question for each passage instead of previous 12 to 14 question. As a result, the duration for this module is reduced to 54 to 72 minutes from the previous 60 to 80 minutes.

2. Listening:

The number of conversations to be heard and questions are the same that is 2-3 conversations and 5 questions for each of them. For the audio lectures, the number of lectures is reduced to 3-4 lectures from 4-6 lectures. They will have 6 questions each. As a result, the duration for this module will be 41-57 minutes, which was 60-90 minutes before.

3. Speaking:

In the speaking module, there will be 4 tasks instead of 6, and the time that was of 20 minutes before will be reduced to 17 minutes.

There are no changes for the Writing module of TOEFL Exam Pattern.

Changes in TOEFL Scoring System:

There are no fundamental changes in the new scoring system for the TOEFL. ETS has introduced a new feature called MyBest™ Scores. With this feature, when the scores are displayed, the best scores acquired by the candidate over the last two years are displayed in the scores. Here is an example:

If a candidate has appear for the test twice in span of two years, for each module, his best TOEFL iBT scores will be displayed under MyBest™ scores. If he has scored more in listening in the first attempt, and the score is more for reading in his second attempt, both of them will be displayed under MyBest™ scores. In short, for all the attempts, this feature will show the highest scores you have achieved among all the attempts.

How to Prepare for TOEFL after the changes?

Now, there comes a preparation part if you are someone who is planning to appear for the test after August 1. It is important to know that there are no changes in the types of the questions asked, or the way of giving answers. With TOEFL exam pattern changes, the only change is in the number of questions asked. The number of the question is reduced for each of the module and consequently the time, too. Preparation for the exam should stay the same keeping in mind the fact that the questions will be less in numbers. You can opt for the ETS TOEFL Practice Tests for the preparation, too, or our guide on How to Prepare for TOEFL.

TOEFL Exam Fees

There are no changes in the exam fees for the TOEFL exams for now. The fees remain the same even after the changes in the TOEFL exam pattern. The fees depend on the country one wants to take the test in, and for India, it stands at $180 as of now. There are also later registration and rescheduling fees for added services as such.
