The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test or NEET is a national level entrance exam for applicants aspiring to study medicine and be a doctor.

The exam is of 3 types – Undergraduate, Graduate, and Postgraduate.

By appearing for the NEET, you’ll be eligible to get admission in any graduate medical course (MBBS) or postgraduate course (MD / MS) in government or private medical colleges in India. There is a second kind of NEET, appearing in which you are deemed eligible to get admission in any undergraduate medical course, the NEET-UG. This exam for MBBS and BDS courses is conducted by CBSE.

NEET-UG replaced the AIPMT in 2013. Not all medical colleges consider scores in NEET as the basis for admission. 

Applicants are allowed to write their exam in English and 9 other Indian languages namely, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada and Odia. These exams consist questions from 3 basic subjects namely, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

Eligibility

NEET eligibility requirements:

Applicants must have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or will complete the required age on or before Dec 31 of the year of his/her admission to the 1st year MBBS/BDS Course.

The upper age limit for the exam is 25 years on the exam date. Leisure of 5 years for Applicants belonging to OBC/SC/ST category will be given.

Age criteria to appear for NEET (UG):

  • Unreserved category students: On or between May 8, 1992 to Jan 1, 2001
  • SC/ST/OBC category students: May 8, 1987 and Jan 1, 2001

Number of attempts:

  • The number of attempts which an aspirant can avail will be limited to 3 (three) uniformly to all the Applicants. Appearance in NEET-2017 will be counted as first attempt.
  • Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) & Foreign Nationals, Oversees Citizen of India (OCIs), Indian Nationals, Non Resident Indians (NRIs) are eligible to appear in NEET (UG)-2017.

Eligibility for seats under the control of States/Universities/Institutions/ AFMC/Central Pool Quota:

  • Indian Nationals, Non Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), Oversees Citizen of India (OCIs) & Foreign Nationals will be eligible for admission in Medical/Dental Colleges subject to rules and regulations framed by the respective State Governments, Institution and the Government of India. These Applicants are eligible for 15% All India Quota Seats.
  • International students can confirm their eligibility from the concerned Medical/Dentals college/state.

Exam Pattern

NEET will be a three hour examination consisting of 180 objective type questions from Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany & Zoology). The exam will be held in 8 languages including - Kannada, Oriya, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Assamese, Hindi and English.

 For each correct answer, students will get four marks and for one mark will be deducted for any question answered incorrectly.
