ABOUT JEE Main

Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE) is an All India Common Entrance Exam for admission to engineering colleges across India. It is conducted in two phases, JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The NITs, IIITs and other central or state funded institutes grant admission based on JEE Main. JEE is considered as one of the toughest exams in the world. Over 1.4 million students appear and only 20000 get a rank.

JEE Main Paper-1 evaluates the aptitude of candidates who want to pursue BE/BTech at NITs, IIITs and CFTIs. This exam is also the eligibility test for JEE advanced which is the entrance exam to secure admissions in programs on offer by 16 IITs and Indian School of Mines (ISM). The top 250,000 score holders in JEE Main are only eligible to apply for JEE Advanced exam.

Eligibility criteria related to Date of Birth

  • Students who are born on or after October 1, 1992 are eligible to apply.
  • Candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Persons with Disabilities (PwD), should have been born on or after October 1, 1987. Candidates of these categories have been given a relaxation of 5 years.

Note: Date of birth will be considered as per the Secondary Education Board/University certificate.

Eligibility criteria related to qualifying exam

Aspirants should have passed 12th class or qualifying exam in 2015 or 2016.

Students, who are appearing in class 12th or qualifying exam in 2017 can also apply.

Eligibility criteria related to total subjects/subject combination

  • It is mandatory for aspiring candidates to have taken 5 subjects in 12th or qualifying exam
  • The 5 subjects for B.Tech/B.E. are:

1-Language, 2-Physics, 3-Mathematics,

4-Any one of (Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational Subject), 5-Any other subject

  • According to MHRD, apart from admissions to IITs, the qualifying marks for admission to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs have also been revised. As per the notification, for applicants to be eligible for admissions to NITs/IIITs/GFTIs, they should have secured at least 75% marks in class 12th exam or be in the top 20 percentile in the class 12th exam held by the respective boards. For SC/ST applicants, the eligibility criteria is 65% marks in class 12th.

For mathematics, B.Arch./B.Planning subject along with 50% marks in total with five subjects.

Eligibility related to total number of attempts

A JEE Main candidate can avail 3 efforts for the national level undergraduate engineering entrance test.
